Trout Unlimited (TU) and the White River Watershed Partnership (WRWP) are teaming up to complete a watershed inventory utilizing TU’s newly developed RIVERS mobile app (River Inventory for Efficient Restoration Strategies). The RIVERS mobile application is a convenient way for volunteer groups to map disturbances on their home waters while fishing or conducting a watershed inventory. By conducting a thorough survey of the White River watershed TU and WRWP intend to create a comprehensive picture of impairments, such as fish passage barriers, erosion issues, lacking riparian cover, in-stream habitat and more. This will allow for more strategic and effective identification of priority projects across the watershed. TU and WRWP are seeking volunteer citizen scientists to assist in this effort.
Volunteers interested in assisting with this effort should plan to attend an orientation at the Hesperia Community Library on August 15, 2019 from 6-8:30pm. At this orientation prospective volunteers will learn about the goals of the project, how to use the RIVERS mobile application, what to look for when out on the stream and will be assigned a stretch of stream or river to survey, either by boat or by wading. Volunteers may also use the application to map impairments observed while fishing, boating and recreating in the White River watershed, or elsewhere. Attendees can register at the orientation or pre-register by contacting Jake Lemon, TU Eastern Angler Science Coordinator. [email protected]; 814-779-3965
