SUMMARY:2025 Women on the Water
DESCRIPTION:Hey ladies\, looking for more fishy friends? Join us for our annual Women on the Water weekend getaway! Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited proudly presents this women’s only weekend at the Pere Marquette River Lodge. \n\n\n\nThe PM Lodge is an Orvis-Endorsed Outfitter with a fully stocked fly shop located along the banks of one of Michigan’s most prized blue-ribbon trout streams – the Pere Marquette River in Baldwin. Check out this article on the Pere Marquette River from Trout Magazine and learn more about TU’s Priority Waters work on the Pere Marquette. \n\n\n\nSchedule\n\n\n\nThe focus of this weekend is on camaraderie and fly fishing at dark! All experience levels are welcome. There will be opportunities to learn and fine-tune fly fishing skills ahead of our full-day guided float trip on Saturday night. Guide trips are scheduled in the evening in hopes of dodging the heat of summer as this is better for fishing and trout handling. We will likely start by casting big\, buoyant dry flies and hopper patterns\, and as dusk turns to night\, switch over to mousing in the dark for bigger brown trout (the plan is subject to change based on conditions). \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\n\nDate: July 25-27\, 2025Location: Pere Marquette River Lodge in Baldwin\, Mich.Cost: $550-$650 per person\, includes two nights’ lodging\, one guided float trip\, and meals. Single rooms are $650 per person\, double rooms are $550 per person.Group size is limited to the first 18 registrants. \n\n\n\nQuestions? Contact Vice President Paige Werner at wernerp2@gmail.com or 616-516-9908 with questions or to be added to our email list for future women’s programming. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRates and Contact Info

The name Wa Wa Sum means “Plain View” in the Ojibwa language and was given to the camp in 1905 by Chief David Shoppenagon\, an Au Sable guide and woodsman.\n\nAt the time\, because of the extensive logging of the region’s pine forests\, the view from the high bank on which the camp is built was unobstructed for miles to the South. Since then\, the forests have regenerated\, slowly obscuring the view of the river.\n\nChief Shoppenagon built the first building at the camp\, now known as the Dining Room\, in 1880. In 1897\, Rubin Babbitt\, an Au Sable woodsman who later became Michigan’s first wildlife officer\, built a second structure\, now the Administration Building.\n\nThese first buildings were constructed of red pine and tamarack logs and used as a fishing camp for a group of Toledo businessmen. Other cabins of various sizes were added in later years: the Bullpen (1907)\, the Big Camp (1921/22)\, the Barn and the Guide’s Cabin (early 1930’s).\n\nThe buildings and 251 acres of land were deeded to MSU in 1980 by owners Virginia Secor Stranahan and Frank Bell\, descendants of two of the camp’s six original owners. Kevin Gardiner\, a descendant of Rubin Babbitt\, is the camp’s present caretaker. He is the third generation of his family to perform these duties.\n\nRelated Links: Wa Wa Sum on Facebook – Society of Architectural Historians Arcipedia\n\nThis slideshow requires JavaScript. \n\n

In 1897\, Rubin Babbitt\, an Au Sable woodsman who later became Michigan’s first wildlife officer\, built a second structure\, now the Administration Building. These first buildings were constructed of red pine and tamarack logs and used as a fishing camp for a group of Toledo businessman. Other cabins of various sizes were added in later years: the Bullpen (1907)\, the Big Camp (1921/22)\, the Barn and the Guide’s Cabin (early 1930’s). The buildings and 251 acres of land were deeded to MSU in1980 by owners Virginia Secor Stranahan and Frank Bell\, descendants of two of the camp’s six original owners. Kevin Gardiner\, a descendant of Rubin Babbitt\, is the camp’s present caretaker. He is the third generation of his family to perform these duties.
