SUMMARY:2022 SWMTU member's weekend at Wa Wa Sum
DESCRIPTION:Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited\, for the 40th year\, will be hosting our member’s weekend at the Wa Wa Sum Lodge on the Au Sable River east of Grayling. Beginning Thursday\, June 23 through Sunday\, June 26\, the communal lodge\, owned and operated by Michigan State University\, will again host the Schrems Chapter.\n\nThe lodge is located on the “Holy Waters.” A very wadable and world-famous stretch of the Au Sable that is fly fishing only and all catch and release.\n\nThe lodge sleeps 26 in twin beds in rooms (including 2 beds on the screened-in porch) with 3 or 4 beds per room with 2 communal bathrooms. There is a wonderful screened-in porch with handmade rocking chairs overlooking the Au Sable. This is an authentic fishing lodge from another century.\n\nA communal kitchen building is fully stocked with the necessary hardware for cooking and consuming. You must bring your own bedding (all twin beds) or sleeping bag and towels for the weekend. This is not a Ritz Carlton.\n\nSchrems will host a Friday cookout at 12:30 pm\, open to all at no cost. The luncheon will also allow you to pack a meal for your evening fishing. All other food and beverage are on your own for the weekend. In addition to the refrigerator in the kitchen building\, there is a refrigerator in the lodge.\nReservation Instructions\nYou can reserve your spot at the bottom of this page. Everyone who registers MUST select the “2020 Wa Wa Sum Deposit” and also select the desired nights for lodging.\n\n The cost per evening is $50. You may come for one night\, two nights\, or three nights.\n A deposit of $50 is required for everyone. Your deposit will go toward the first night of lodging.\n All lodging is first-come\, first-serve. There are only 26 beds available\, and camping is not allowed.\n If a night shows “0 available” that means no beds are available that night.\n If reserving for multiple people\, a deposit and a lodging night must be paid for each person.\n You can pay your lodging balance at Wa Wa Sum by check or cash.\n\nTo make your reservation\, scroll to the bottom of this page and purchase a ticket.\n\nReservation payments happen via PayPal\, but you are not required to have a PayPal account. You can use any credit card for payment.\n\nYour contact for more information or questions is Lance Climie at lanceclimie@hotmail.com.\nMore about Wa Wa Sum Lodge\nWa Wa Sum is a Michigan State University research and conference facility located on the Au Sable River six miles east of Grayling. The name Wa Wa Sum means “Plain View” in the Ojibwa language and was given to the camp in 1905 by Chief David Shoppenagon\, an Au Sable guide and woodsman.\n\nAt the time\, because of the extensive logging of the region’s pine forests\, the view from the high bank on which the camp is built was unobstructed for miles to the South. Since then\, the forests have regenerated\, slowly obscuring the view of the river.\n\nChief Shoppenagon built the first building at the camp\, now known as the Dining Room\, in 1880. In 1897\, Rubin Babbitt\, an Au Sable woodsman who later became Michigan’s first wildlife officer\, built a second structure\, now the Administration Building.\n\nThese first buildings were constructed of red pine and tamarack logs and used as a fishing camp for a group of Toledo businessmen. Other cabins of various sizes were added in later years: the Bullpen (1907)\, the Big Camp (1921/22)\, the Barn and the Guide’s Cabin (early 1930’s).\n\nThe buildings and 251 acres of land were deeded to MSU in 1980 by owners Virginia Secor Stranahan and Frank Bell\, descendants of two of the camp’s six original owners. Kevin Gardiner\, a descendant of Rubin Babbitt\, is the camp’s present caretaker. He is the third generation of his family to perform these duties.\n\nRelated Links: Wa Wa Sum on Facebook – Society of Architectural Historians Arcipedia\n\nThis slideshow requires JavaScript. \n\n

SUMMARY:Wa Wa Sum members outing - 2021
DESCRIPTION:Michigan State University plans to have Wa Wa Sum lodge open this summer to membership outings\, and SWMTU also plans to hold its annual membership outing at the lodge. \nFor this year we will limit attendance to 25 people. As of April 21\, 2021\, registration is filled. \nIf you have questions\, please reach out to Larry Risbridger. \n___________________ \nWe are now taking reservations for our annual membership outing at the Wa Wa Sum Lodge. The lodge is located on the banks of the Main Stream of the Au Sable’s fabled “holy waters\,” just east of Grayling\, Michigan. \nArrival is any time after noon on Thursday\, June 17 with departure on Sunday\, June 20. You may come for one\, two or all three nights. This year’s rate with be $40.00 for one night\, $80.00 for two nights\, and $120.00 for three nights. \nDue to MSU policy changes\, registration is different this year. You’ll need to provide the name\, address\, email\, and phone number for each person who is attending. Additionally\, we require a $40 non-refundable deposit to reserve your space for the weekend. The $40 deposit will be applied to your first night of lodging. You can pay the remaining balance at Wa Wa Sum. \nPlease make your reservation using the form at the bottom of this page. Please select the $40 option for “Deposit Only” to reserve your spot. \nACCOMMODATIONS\nThe Wa Wa Sum Lodge is a historic log building with a great porch overlooking the Au Sable River. Sleeping arrangements are dorm-style\, so bring your own bedding or sleeping bag and towels. \nFOOD\nWe will be providing some food for a Saturday morning breakfast and assorted snacks. Please plan to bring your own food and your own beverages. There are many restaurants located nearby in Grayling and Gates Lodge is just down the road which offers a great sit-down restaurant option for breakfast\, lunch or dinner as well as delicious to-go riverside meals. If you prefer preparing your own food\, there is a grill available for your use at the lodge. \nFISHING\nMid-June is traditionally a great time for some of the best hatches of the season. You can fish right in front of the lodge on the Au Sable or venture to other areas of including the North Branch and South Branch of the Au Sable and the Manistee River. (NOTE: there is a good chance that the famous Hex Hatch will be on.) If still water fishing is of interest\, Wakely Lake is nearby for bass and bluegills. \nMORE INFORMATION ABOUT WA WA SUM (COURTESY OF MSU)\nWa Wa Sum is a Michigan State University research and conference facility located on the Au Sable River six miles east of Grayling. The name Wa Wa Sum means “Plain View” in the Ojibwa language and was given to the camp in 1905 by Chief David Shoppenagon\, an Au Sable guide and woodsman. At the time\, because of the extensive logging of the region’s pine forests\, the view from the high bank on which the camp is built was unobstructed for miles to the South. Since then\, the forests have regenerated\, slowly obscuring the view of the river. Chief Shoppenagon built the first building at the camp\, now known as the Dining Room\, in 1880. In 1897\, Rubin Babbitt\, an Au Sable woodsman who later became Michigan’s first wildlife officer\, built a second structure\, now the Administration Building. These first buildings were constructed of red pine and tamarack logs and used as a fishing camp for a group of Toledo businessman. Other cabins of various sizes were added in later years: the Bullpen (1907)\, the Big Camp (1921/22)\, the Barn and the Guide’s Cabin (early 1930’s). The buildings and 251 acres of land were deeded to MSU in1980 by owners Virginia Secor Stranahan and Frank Bell\, descendants of two of the camp’s six original owners. Kevin Gardiner\, a descendant of Rubin Babbitt\, is the camp’s present caretaker. He is the third generation of his family to perform these duties.

Nicole’s research examines predation by young Brook and Brown trout on newly hatched Grayling fry and competition between age-0 Grayling and Brook and Brown trout of the same year class. She also investigates early-life imprinting to home-waters of Arctic Grayling. The information learned through this research will provide guidance to the reintroduction program and aid in the selection of suitable streams based on fish community structure. SUMMARY:Wa Wa Sum 2020 outing
DESCRIPTION:We have been wrestling with the event for some time. The lodge has not yet decided on operations for this season. That is a decision that will be made by Michigan State University who owns and operates Wa Wa Sum. We are expecting more information by the end of May. \nWe are setting some limitations for this year should lodge operations open. We have been in touch with the 7 individuals who have signed up to date. For this year we will limit attendance to 14 persons. That is Two persons per room. If you choose to attend and share a room\, you must arrange your bunkmate prior to arrival. We are reserving the available lodging for Schrems members. We will not be providing any food or beverage this year and we will not be using the kitchen or dining room. \nWe expect everyone to come “self-contained”. \nWe have been asked about using a tent on site but that is not allowed by Wa Wa Sum. \nThe price per night will be $50 and not $60 as we are not including some meals and snacks. \nWe will not be gathering as a group as we have in the past. One point in our favor is that the lodge is vacant the Four days prior to our arrival. We want everyone to be safe while enjoying the Holy Waters. \nAgain\, we are waiting on MSU to decide if Wa Wa Sum operates this summer. \nIf interested in attending\, please reach out to Lance Climie or Larry Risbridger. \nThank You\,\nLance Climie\nSWMTU \n___________________ \nWe are now taking reservations for our annual membership outing at the Wa Wa Sum Lodge.
