SUMMARY:2021 Mayors' Grand River Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:From Saturday\, September 11th\, through Saturday\, September 18th\, WMEAC will provide supplies to volunteers throughout the communities of Grand Rapids\, Wyoming\, Grandville\, Walker\, Kentwood\, and now East Grand Rapids to remove trash from the tributaries and storm drains that feed into the Grand River as well as from the Grand River itself. \nThis year you can sign up as an individual\, a small group of friends or family\, or as a business to take on this challenge! \nIndividuals:\nTrash bags and disposable gloves will be provided to all registered participants. Please note: we are not assigning individuals or small groups (less than 5 volunteers) to sites this year. Due to a limited number of cleanup locations we recommend that individual volunteers select sidewalks\, streets or parks near their home or business to clean up. \nGroups:\nDo you have a group of friends\, neighbors\, or coworkers that you would like to volunteer with? This year we are coordinating with groups of more than 5 participants to adopt a cleanup site from our curated Cleanup Site Map! \nWe ask that all groups respect social distancing measures and provide their volunteers with the recommended personal protection equipment. Trash bags and disposable gloves will be provided to all participants within the group. \nIndividuals AND Groups Register HERE! \nTrash Scout:\nDo you know of a spot in your community that is contaminated with trash? Submit details to khart@wmeac.org to have the location highlighted on our Google Story Map to recruit the help of Mayors’ Grand River Cleanup volunteers. \nVolunteers:\nEven with our new\, decentralized model we always need extra hands to make things run smoothly. We are looking for volunteers to assist with passing out supplies and kickoff event set-up/clean-up. If you are interested in volunteering please contact mayorscleanup@wmeac.org. \n  \nCleanup Site Map\n  \nThis year we are coordinating with groups of more than 5 participants to adopt a cleanup site from our curated Cleanup Site Map! \nEach site is rated for its accessibility to the Grand River and safety considerations. Click the link to the map to get the details on the different sites! \nMake sure to reserve the cleanup site that suits you best HERE.

SUMMARY:Wa Wa Sum members outing - 2021
DESCRIPTION:Michigan State University plans to have Wa Wa Sum lodge open this summer to membership outings\, and SWMTU also plans to hold its annual membership outing at the lodge. \nFor this year we will limit attendance to 25 people. As of April 21\, 2021\, registration is filled. \nIf you have questions\, please reach out to Larry Risbridger. \n___________________ \nWe are now taking reservations for our annual membership outing at the Wa Wa Sum Lodge. The lodge is located on the banks of the Main Stream of the Au Sable’s fabled “holy waters\,” just east of Grayling\, Michigan. \nArrival is any time after noon on Thursday\, June 17 with departure on Sunday\, June 20. You may come for one\, two or all three nights. This year’s rate with be $40.00 for one night\, $80.00 for two nights\, and $120.00 for three nights. \nDue to MSU policy changes\, registration is different this year. You’ll need to provide the name\, address\, email\, and phone number for each person who is attending. Additionally\, we require a $40 non-refundable deposit to reserve your space for the weekend. The $40 deposit will be applied to your first night of lodging. You can pay the remaining balance at Wa Wa Sum. \nPlease make your reservation using the form at the bottom of this page. Please select the $40 option for “Deposit Only” to reserve your spot. \nACCOMMODATIONS\nThe Wa Wa Sum Lodge is a historic log building with a great porch overlooking the Au Sable River. Sleeping arrangements are dorm-style\, so bring your own bedding or sleeping bag and towels. \nFOOD\nWe will be providing some food for a Saturday morning breakfast and assorted snacks. Please plan to bring your own food and your own beverages. There are many restaurants located nearby in Grayling and Gates Lodge is just down the road which offers a great sit-down restaurant option for breakfast\, lunch or dinner as well as delicious to-go riverside meals. If you prefer preparing your own food\, there is a grill available for your use at the lodge. \nFISHING\nMid-June is traditionally a great time for some of the best hatches of the season. You can fish right in front of the lodge on the Au Sable or venture to other areas of including the North Branch and South Branch of the Au Sable and the Manistee River. (NOTE: there is a good chance that the famous Hex Hatch will be on.) If still water fishing is of interest\, Wakely Lake is nearby for bass and bluegills. \nMORE INFORMATION ABOUT WA WA SUM (COURTESY OF MSU)\nWa Wa Sum is a Michigan State University research and conference facility located on the Au Sable River six miles east of Grayling. The name Wa Wa Sum means “Plain View” in the Ojibwa language and was given to the camp in 1905 by Chief David Shoppenagon\, an Au Sable guide and woodsman. At the time\, because of the extensive logging of the region’s pine forests\, the view from the high bank on which the camp is built was unobstructed for miles to the South. Since then\, the forests have regenerated\, slowly obscuring the view of the river. Chief Shoppenagon built the first building at the camp\, now known as the Dining Room\, in 1880. In 1897\, Rubin Babbitt\, an Au Sable woodsman who later became Michigan’s first wildlife officer\, built a second structure\, now the Administration Building. These first buildings were constructed of red pine and tamarack logs and used as a fishing camp for a group of Toledo businessman. Other cabins of various sizes were added in later years: the Bullpen (1907)\, the Big Camp (1921/22)\, the Barn and the Guide’s Cabin (early 1930’s). The buildings and 251 acres of land were deeded to MSU in1980 by owners Virginia Secor Stranahan and Frank Bell\, descendants of two of the camp’s six original owners. Kevin Gardiner\, a descendant of Rubin Babbitt\, is the camp’s present caretaker. He is the third generation of his family to perform these duties.

SUMMARY:Upper Peninsula Fly Fishing
DESCRIPTION:From a fly fishing perspective\, the Upper Peninsula of Michigan has been synonymous with brook trout\, Ernest Hemingway\, and the Big Two-Hearted River. And rightfully so. Year after year\, fly anglers visit the U.P. to wade the cold\, dark waters to pursue the feisty\, bejeweled brook trout. For many\, brook trout fishing in the U.P is a rite of passage. But the U.P. offers many other amazing fly fishing opportunities for the adventurous angler.  \nJoin Caddis Shack Guide Service (from Escanaba\, MI) as they share their recommendations for fly fishing the south-central Upper Peninsula. Whether you’re a diehard angler looking to tangle with some great fish\, planning a special trip with friends\, or just wanting to explore the U.P. they’ll share some great ideas to help you plan your next adventure. \nIf you’d like to learn more about Caddis Shack Guide Service visit them at www.caddisshackguideservice.com. \n  \nOnline Seminar Details\nDate: Tuesday\, February 23\, 2021\, at 7:00 pm eastern \nWe are hosting this online seminar on Zoom with overflow participants able to join on YouTube. \nZoom is limited to the first 100 participants. SUMMARY:Fall Workday on the Rogue River
DESCRIPTION:Volunteers needed! \nPlease join the City of Rockford Sustainability Committee\, Kent Conservation District\, and Trout Unlimited for an invasive species work day along the Rogue River in Rockford\, MI. Volunteers will work to cut and treat the invasive Bittersweet vine which can strangle and kill trees and take over woods. \nThe Rogue River depends on trees for shade\, habitat\, river bank stability\, and pollution filtering so eradicating the Bittersweet vine to prevent it from spreading further is critical. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, October 24th at 9am at the Rockford Dam parking lot. Please wear a face mask\, work gloves\, and closed-toe shoes. Waterproof boots are recommended. All other equipment will be provided. No experience necessary.
