SUMMARY:Screening of "Beyond the Stream" - canceled
DESCRIPTION:We are canceling the “Beyond the Stream: Michigan’s TU Youth Conservation and Trout Camp” showing at S2S on Monday\, October 27; however\, we are providing a link to the film for your personal viewing and another to donate to the Youth Camp. \n\n\n\n\nWatch Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIt is critical to TU’s future that we inspire and educate the next generation of conservationists and fishing enthusiasts\, and this camp plays a significant role for Michigan TU chapters. If you can support the Youth Camp with a contribution\, please click below and put “youth camp” in the message box. \n\n\n\n\nDonate Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor those wishing to view the film in a public setting\, the Kalamazoo Valley Chapter will be showing the film on Thursday\, October 16 from 6-9 p.m. at Lucky Wolf Theatre in Paw Paw. You can register here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Beyond the Stream: Michigan Trout Unlimited’s Youth Conservation and Trout Camp” was created to benefit the TU Youth Trout Camp\n\n\n\nIn 2024\, the Kalamazoo Valley chapter of Trout Unlimited contracted with fly fishing filmmaker Robert Thompson (“The River” and “Night of the Hex”) to produce a documentary film capturing all that is our Michigan Trout Unlimited Youth Conservation and Trout Camp. The result of this partnership is “Beyond the Stream: Michigan Trout Unlimited’s Youth Conservation and Trout Camp”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Beyond the Stream” captures the heart and soul of our youth camp: the generational connections formed between campers\, new and experienced alike\, and the volunteer counselors\, many of whom have been a part of camp from its earliest days. Much like his film “The River”\, Thompson is able to connect the viewer to the men and women\, girls and boys that come together on the banks of the storied Au Sable River. It’s a story that started many years ago with an idea and a mission\, and “Beyond the Stream” offers both a heart-warming narrative as young people like Madeline\, Ben\, Cece and Lily find themselves and each other as they become immersed in fly fishing along the river upon which Trout Unlimited was founded\, but also a hopeful glimpse into the future of cold water conservation as those same youth connect with TU volunteers like Greg\, Lori and Jon.

SUMMARY:Tie-A-Thon fly tying - Jan. 22
DESCRIPTION:This year\, Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited is partnering with Orvis Grand Rapids to host fly tying sessions to benefit Tie-A-Thon! \n\n\n\nThis is the 20th year for Tie-A-Thon\, a group based in South Bend\, IN. Tie-A-Thon collects donated flies to support programs focused on healing and education through fly fishing. This has grown into a national movement uniting fly tyers of all skill levels for one shared purpose – to give back through the art of fly tying. \n\n\n\nThis milestone year\, Tie-A-Thon is proud to support five exceptional organizations whose missions use fly fishing to promote healing\, growth\, and education: \n\n\n\n• Reel Recovery – based in Massachusetts\, helping men living with cancer find renewal through fly fishing retreats and fellowship. \n\n\n\n• Casting for Recovery – National – headquartered in Bozeman\, MT\, supporting breast cancer survivors through healing fly fishing experiences across the country. \n\n\n\n• Fishing the Good Fight – based in Colorado\, advancing men’s mental health awareness and connection through fly fishing. \n\n\n\n• Black Mountain Home for Children\, Youth\, and Families – located in North Carolina\, empowering youth through outdoor education and fly fishing programs. \n\n\n\n• Lee University Fly Fishing Education – located in Tennessee\, integrating fly fishing into higher education as a tool for stewardship and personal growth. \n\n\n\nFly tyers of all skill levels are welcome to help us meet our pledge of 200 flies per pattern. Each of our fly-tying sessions will focus on one pattern\, but we also collect donated flies that were completed outside of those sessions. \n\n\n\nOur tying schedule is as follows: \n\n\n\n\nThursday\, January 22 – pheasant tail nymph\, hook size 18-14\n\n\n\nThursday\, February 26 – elk hair caddis\, hook size 18-14\n\n\n\nThursday\, March 26 – soft hackles\, hook size 16-14\n\n\n\n\nBring your own vice and supplies if you have them. Supplies for basic patterns will be provided by SWMTU and others will be available to purchase at Orvis GR. Variants of the pattern (i.e.\, weighted nymphs\, euronymphs\, different body colors) are happily accepted. While this is not a fly-tying class\, assistance will be available. \n\n\n\nPlease register for a free ticket below for each attendee because space is limited.
