Here’s the summary of the SWMTU board meeting on April 12, 2021 …

Chapter Elections

The recent election of board members that took place via the Internet resulted in the re-election of the following people to a three-year term ending March 31, 2024: Steve Frendt, Kate Fulton, Nick Garlock, Dave Whitfield, and George Zuiderveen.

Two open positions were filled with the election of Heidi Frasure and Shaun Rayman, again with their terms ending March 31, 2024.

Chapter officers have also been elected:
President – Steve Frendt
Vice President – Nick Garlock
Secretary – Larry Risbridger
Treasurer – Tom Mundt

Rogue River Home Rivers Initiative

Tree plantings have recently been completed at four watershed schools: Rockford Christian School, East Rockford Middle School, Kent City High School, and Grant Christian School.

In the next few weeks, work crews will complete a large-scale planting of 8,000 trees at eight different sites.

Partnering will take place with a Grand Haven t-shirt company to produce and sell shirts with logos as a fundraising event for future projects.

Conservation

Muskegon River – multiple temperature loggers will be placed in the river in May to collect data on river water temperatures.

Coldwater River – a team is being formed to determine what projects should be conducted on the Coldwater River.

Prairie Creek – two grant proposals have been submitted and decisions should be made within the next 60 days.

White River – priorities are being looked at for consideration for needs in the next three to five years.

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 – Guest speakers include Kristin Thomas of Michigan Trout Unlimited and Brian Gunderman, Mark Tonello, and Jay Wesley representing the Michigan DNR.

Upcoming events

Thursday, June 17-Sunday, June 20, 2021 – the annual weekend gathering of fellow Schrems members at Camp Wa Wa Sum in Grayling. A few openings are available for those interested, see the website for information.

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 – annual Cast ‘n Blast event with the Ruffed Grouse Society at the Kent County Conservation League, for details, see the Schrems website.

Tuesday, November 16, 2021 – tentative date for our in-person annual banquet at Watermark Country Club, details to follow.

Date TBD – a summer Youth Day to include fly fishing instructions, at a stream and date to be determined.
