SWMTU Board Meeting

Here are the summary notes from the SWMTU board meeting held on December 7, 2021 …

Home River Initiative

  • Tree planting season is over with 13,000 trees being planted during five volunteer events involving 120 individuals.
  • Work is continuing at Southwood Elementary School’s Science Club to monitor Buck Creek. A stream restoration workshop is being developed to introduce and train NRCS and Kent Conservation District staff in innovative stream restoration practices.

Embrace a Stream fundraiser

We want to thank everyone who gave a donation for the recent Embrace a Stream fundraising event to gather funds for work on the Coldwater River. With your generosity along with support from Trout Unlimited National and our friends at Orvis, we raised more than $8,000. Again thank you!

Fundraising Banquet

Planning is ongoing for our first in-person fundraising banquet since April 2019. The banquet will be on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at the Watermark Country Club in Grand Rapids. We have a wonderful selection of items available through live auctions, silent auctions, and bucket raffles. Please join us as we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of our chapter. Please go here for details and sign-up information.

Salmon in the Classroom

On November 17, 2021, Schrem’s members helped distribute Salmon eggs at the Wolf Lake Hatchery in Mattawan, to over 130 schools that participate in the Salmon in the Classroom program in the West Michigan area. Schrems chapter alone sponsors 18 schools by providing and maintaining aquarium equipment.

Seminars

The chapter hopes to be holding an in-person seminar and get-together in the new year. We will be sure to let you know when and where this may take place.
