Summary of Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 4, 2024

Conservation

BUCK CREEK

Guest Kim Chrisman from the Grandville Parks and Recreation spoke of relating to a possible project area at the Grandville Cemetery along Buck Creek (1,000 feet of creek frontage). The city of Grandville board is interested in Partnering with Schrems on a project. The project will become part of the parks and rec five year plan.

WHITE RIVER

Board member Dane Ward reported that Michigan TU and National TU received grant funding and are looking at possible project sites. Mena Creek has been identified as a possible sight for a Fall Cleanup. Jeff Beehler reported that the dam on Mena Creek DOES NOT need a big scope of a service study; and that the Forest Service has decided to do their own survey this summer.

ROGUE RIVER

One of Schrems working partners, Josh Zuiderveen, has identified seven sites where there is erosion, where stone steps could be added. Adding steps could be a potential Embrace a Stream grant candidate

TYLER CREEK

Jeff Beehler reported that the InterCounty drain commissioners of Ionia and Kent are very interested in the creek channel.There are several proposals. Working partner Aaron Snell suggests having Schrems cover fish habitat and restoration and letting the Drain Commissioners take care of the earth moving. It was mentioned
that Schrems should request funding from the Oak Brook TU chapter in Chicago and the Coldwater River Watershed Council.

Orvis Great Giveback Days

During the month long give back days at the Grand Rapids Orvis Corporate Store, $3,459.00 was donated by customers. These funds will be designated for projects on the Coldwater River/Tyler Creek.

Friends of Buck Creek

A motion was presented and approved to again fund $400.00 to the Friends of Buck Creek for their annual river clean up.

Cast n’ Blast event

This annual event, in partnership with the Ruffed Grouse Society, will be Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the Kent County Conservation League. Details can be found here.

Salmon in the Classroom

Schrems looks to be adding the Lee Elementary School in Middleville to our list of schools we sponsor and provide equipment, for the 2024-25 school year.
