Summary of Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited Board Meeting on Tuesday, May 2, 2023

New Board Member

Jeff Beehler has been appointed to fill an open position on the board, left vacant by the passing of Dave Whitfield. Jeff will serve out the term expiring on March 31, 2024. Jeff worked for years in California doing environmental consulting for both the private and public sector. Also Jeff worked on environmental projects for public utilities. He closed out his career working in management for a water utility. Jeff lives in the Greenville area. Welcome aboard Jeff.

Conservation

WHITE RIVER – Sadony Bayou – Pierson Creek
Schrems has been asked by a group of concerned citizens to help seek grant money to do survey work on insects, fish and plant life within Sadony Bayou, with the goal of restoring the bayou.

MUSKEGON RIVER – Several board members along with Dr. Mark Luttenton will be conducting a survey on the Muskegon River May 28, 2023 to identify areas for temperature loggers. They will also be surveying river structures and opportunities for further structure placement. Trout Unlimited’s Jake Lemon may also be conducting drone fly overs this summer to gather information

COLDWATER RIVER – A successful day was had on April 23, 2023 with volunteers planting trees and scrubs along the Pratt Lake Drain, a tributary of the Coldwater River. We thank all those folks who helped out.

Salmon in the Classroom

Many of the area 20 schools that Schrems sponsors are having their Salmon release days, where the students join in and help release the Salmon they have raised over the winter, beginning with Salmon eggs hatching in their school aquariums to healthy releasable size Salmon.

Upcoming Events

Wa Wa Sum weekend – The annual weekend visit for members, at the historic Wa Wa Sum lodge, on the banks of the “Holy Water” stretch of the AuSable River is June 22 thru 26. White River Cleanup – Plans are being finalized for our annual fall river cleanup day on the White River. It will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023. Details will follow on our website.
