(Mlive.com – GRANDVILLE, MI — Calvin Christian High School students are contributing to the salmon population from their classroom and recently got a closeup look at what will be the fruit of their efforts.
As students hovered around a slide-out tray full of fish eggs, some giggled as they softly ran their fingers through the pea-sized pink fish-to-be.
Touring the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery in Mattawan, 12 Honors Biology sophomores learned the intricacies of raising chinook salmon from egg to fry.
Their teacher, Mike Hoekwater was the first to take advantage of a $1,000 grant from Schrems West Michigan Trout Unlimited six years ago to get their school’s conservation effort going and they’ve been at it ever since.
