Fate of Pigeon River dam under review

GAYLORD — Settlement negotiations are under way in a case involving a Pigeon River dam release that caused an extensive fish kill on the river in 2008. Officials from the state, Michigan Trout Unlimited and Pigeon River Country Association are meeting with the dam’s owners to discuss the fate of the impoundment after a June 2008 incident choked the “blue ribbon” trout stream with silt. On December 9th, Trout Unlimited issued an action alert to all TU members in Great Lakes states regarding the Asian carp situation.  Unfortunately it appears that the email did not reach everyone so we are reposting that email in our blog. Michigan sues to close shipping locks

DETROIT (AP) – Michigan asked the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday to close shipping locks near Chicago to prevent Asian carp from invading the Great Lakes and endangering their $7 billion fishery. State Attorney General Mike Cox filed a lawsuit Monday with the nation’s highest court against Illinois, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Rusty Gates passes away

Just saw that Rusty Gates passed away last night. Among many other things, he was a great supporter of cold water conservation in Michigan. This comes from the Gates AuSable website: Rusty meant so much to so many, he fought so hard for so much, and he remained altruistic to the end: worrying about his wife Julie who diligently cared for him, asking about his friends who he was no longer able to see, directing the Anglers of the Au Sable despite his deteriorating health.   I would have expected no less from the man who remains one of the finest, most...
