Groundwater withdrawals
SWMTU’s position on groundwater withdrawal During the March 6, 2007 SWMTU board meeting, the board officially adopted the following position regarding groundwater withdrawals in Michigan: “The Schrems West Michigan Chapter of Trout Unlimited is opposed to all groundwater withdrawals that negatively impact our coldwater resources.” The board continues to follow the progress of Nestle/Ice Mountain and other groups interested in using groundwater in Michigan. On March 15, 2007, Dave Smith, president of SWMTU, submitted a public comment to the DEQ regarding Nestle’s recent application to obtain groundwater near Twin and Chippewa Creeks. Riparian areas
What you can do to protect our lakes and streams What is a Riparian Area? Riparian zones or areas have been defined in several ways, but they are essentially the narrow strips of land that border creeks, rivers or other bodies of water. Because of their proximity to water, plant species and topography of riparian zones differ considerably from those of adjacent uplands. Although they comprise a small proportion of the total landscape, they are among the most diverse biological systems on earth, and they perform important services to people which no amount of human effort and technology can do...
Farm buffer strips
BUFFER BENEFITS ON THE FARM AND ENVIRONMENT Contributed by James G. Scott, District Conservationist Ionia Field Office Now is a good time to consider the potential for buffer strips as a part of your farm operation. Buffer strips are simply strips of a grass and legume mix established on cropland adjacent to any surface water, such as county drains, streams, ponds or wetlands and seasonally flooded woodlots. Benefits of buffer strips are many. Buffer strips can filter out up to 80% of potential soil sediment that may be carried by field surface run-off. This reduces sediment and attached nutrients from...
Dolan Property management plan
This plan was presented to the board for final approval on December 6, 2005 and approved on January 3, 2006. Actual projects for implementation will be approved on an annual basis. Early in 2005, the board of Schrems WMTU commissioned Jack Boss of King and MacGregor Environmental, Inc. to complete a Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) for our property on the Coldwater River, commonly called the Dolan Property. The FSP evaluates the existing conditions and proposes specific recommendations to enhance the property in line with our goals and objectives, as well as provides the owners with a wealth of additional information...
Dolan Natural Area
127 Acres of Undeveloped Forest and Meadow Land The Dolan Natural Area is managed and owned by West Michigan Trout Unlimited, and is intended to be maintained in its natural setting for the enjoyment of all. Hiking and cross country skiing is encouraged, along with fishing the Coldwater River during the trout season. During the summer of 2005, the board of SWMTU approved the hiring of a consultant to create a Forest Stewardship Plan for the Dolan Property. In addition to recommendations, this work includes a detailed inventory of the existing soils, vegetation and wetlands. Where is Dolan Natural Area?...

Schrems Scholarship capital campaign
SWMTU announces capital campaign to fund Schrems Scholarship forever First published April 16, 2004 At the annual spring banquet, SWMTU announced a new Capital Campaign to support the Schrems Scholarship fund forever. Named after Cornelius Schrems, one of the founding members of Trout Unlimited, the $2,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a Michigan State University graduate student who works toward the mission of our chapter. After the passing of Cornelius in 1982, his wife, Sis, founded the Schrems Scholarship Fund. Since that time, Sis funded the scholarships for these students involved in research projects with wild trout populations. In 2000,...
