Many reaches of the Coldwater River contain high-quality aquatic habitat and healthy fish populations. Thirty-two species of fish, including three species of trout, are known to inhabit the river. Deep pools, clean riffles and large woody debris are prevalent. The stream is very productive and the macroinvertebrate community is excellent. However, the reach of river adjacent the Dolan Property, which is owned by Schrems, has been historically dredged and consists of a straight, incised, wide channel with uniformly shallow water and little to no woody debris or other cover for fish. Streambank erosion is present to varying degrees throughout the...

Victory for the Pigeon River
Court sides with Michigan Trout Unlimited and Pigeon River Country Association in Golden Lotus Dam case motion. July, 25, 2011 A recent opinion from the courts just validated what we at TU already knew, that an agreement for a “dam removal” means the physical removal of all of the parts of the dam. It does not mean partial dam removal, dam modification, or dam drawdown as alleged by Golden Lotus and the State of Michigan! With the judge’s ruling today, Golden Lotus is required to completely remove all of its dam on the Pigeon River – the same dam that...

Recap – Match the Hatch
Thanks to one and all who attended. The final count for the presentation was 32. It was a great time to soak up some of the wisdom and lifetime of observations from Mr. Dick Pobst, as well as a chance to meet fellow anglers. In spite of the chilly temperatures and threat of a downpour, we collected samples of aquatic insects from sections above and below the Rockford dam. Check out more photos here. It should be noted that this sampling is also the kick-off for a new hatch chart for the Rogue. As Mr. Pobst outlined, this is to...
Salmon release and bug identification
On May 13th, LaMont Christian students released the 100+ salmon in Deer Creek as is joins the Grand River. This was the first year science teacher Brent Seinen offered Salmon in the Classroom – made possible with a $1,000 grant from Schrems West Michigan TU – and has found it to be a great teaching tool. Back in November, the students toured the MDNR Wolf Lake Hatchery and returned with approximately 200 eyed salmon eggs. For seven months, the students followed the salmon growth to the release size of 3-4 inches. In addition to the salmon release, Schrems board member Dick Smith conducted two-part macro invertebrate...
Match the Hatch with Dick Pobst
The "Match the Hatch" event is a chance for those who know Mr. Pobst's work to spend time with him and hone their skills. For those new to the sport, it is a chance to take a big leap forward in your angling success.
Like father, like son
On Opening Day 2011, five-year old Darby Zuiderveen landed this nice trout in Stegman Creek. Darby’s dad Josh reports the fish was holding in timber put in Stegman Creek last year with help for Schrerms volunteers. That high-end rod is a 3 foot, T&T Batman edition.
Pobst to present Match the Hatch on the Rouge River
Dick Pobst, nationally renowned for his work on aquatic insects, and local elder statesman of Michigan fly fishing, is going to deliver a presentation on Rogue River insects importance to anglers. The focus will be mainly on Mayflies, as they are more prevalent in the spring. Mr. Pobst is also going to cover seining, and imitations to match the hatch.
Fly Fishing Film Tour involvement
During the April 15th Fly Fishing Film Tour, Schrems conducted a youth drawing for a rod/reel package. Lucky winner eight year old Jorden Klein was all smiles when Schrems board member Tom Mundt presented the package.
