Calvin Christian students raise salmon in the classroom

(Mlive.com – GRANDVILLE, MI — Calvin Christian High School students are contributing to the salmon population from their classroom and recently got a closeup look at what will be the fruit of their efforts. As students hovered around a slide-out tray full of fish eggs, some giggled as they softly ran their fingers through the pea-sized pink fish-to-be. Touring the Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery in Mattawan, 12 Honors Biology sophomores learned the intricacies of raising chinook salmon from egg to fry. Family Friendly Fishing Waters

(Michigan DNR) – Most avid anglers can list multiple places they think are great spots to go fishing in Michigan. But for many inexperienced anglers, finding a great spot can be a barrier to encouraging them to go. To address this issue, the DNR is working on a new project, Family Friendly Fishing Waters. This project will consist of developing a website dedicated to connecting interested individuals with local fishing opportunities. To build this website the DNR needs help from volunteers in collecting informative submissions about water bodies located throughout Michigan that would be easy for new anglers to access...

Fly Tying Expo coming soon

The Great Lakes Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers will host the 13th Annual Fly Tying  Exposition at Holt High School in Holt, Michigan (5885 West Holt Road, Holt MI 48842) on Saturday, December 1, 2012. The expo will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Over 80 tiers will be on hand this year to demonstrate their fly tying skills.  Returning talents include Jeff  “Bear” Andrews , Dennis Potter, Ray Schmidt,  Julie Nielsen, Chris Soule, Tim Scott, Jim Reed, Gerry Worden and many others.  There is a modest admission fee for the event: $10.00...
